Increase Your Leadership Impact

The most effective leaders have a growth mindset and are open to new information and knowledge from everyone, not just their peers. They continually refine their skills to lead others well. They know the main purpose and character of a leader is to develop and support others. Leaders who seek career advancement only to attain a title, position, popularity, increased salary, visibility, or status will eventually fail. Why? Because the sole responsibility of a leader is to serve and develop the potential in others. They are called to be servant leaders by putting others first and not themselves.

Unfortunately, many people seek leadership positions for the wrong reasons. Applying for leadership positions is an indication the applicant is interested in serving others in a greater capacity and is willing to perform additional work. Also, they are ready for greater challenges and responsibilities. Leadership is not often portrayed or defined in this manner; therefore, leaders are often deceived. Nevertheless, leadership carries an enormous weight of responsibility and personal sacrifice. How many job vacancies are transparent enough to include this information as part of the required duties? Even if they did, how many candidates would be willing to apply?

Throughout history, the primary duty of kings has been to bear full responsibility for their kingdom and its inhabitants. The king was tasked with ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of all the people within his realm. Although some countries still operate under monarchies, others have leaders with different titles. Regardless of the name or system, the leader's responsibility remains the same. The leader of a nation or family is accountable for everyone under their jurisdiction.

Leaders can increase their impact by investing in the development of their people, programs, and organizations. If leaders only prioritize high-performing individuals on their team, it may indicate a lack of leadership skills. How much work is required of a leader when they are leading a team of superstars? Leading a team can be challenging, but the most effective leaders can motivate and support anyone willing to learn and improve their performance. Leadership requires persistence, patience, active listening, empathy, humility, and the ability to lead without any judgment. Most people expect these qualities from their leaders but are often unwilling to offer the same to others, which leads to an imbalance in leadership across various facets of our lives.
